“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”, the last installment in the series of adventures of the wizard boy, has generated 125.1 million dollars in the United States alone, and 205 million worldwide.
The new film has surpassed by 22% the performance of the previous “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” during its first weekend of theatrical release (102.6 million dollars).
The film broke the record for best weekend for a film in the UK with 17.5 million pounds (28 million dollars), and the best opening weekend series in Australia (15 million dollars) and Russia (12 million dollars).
The film also beats the record opening for a film in Imax theaters, with a total of $ 16.6 million collected this weekend: $ 12.4 million in 239 locations in North America and $ 4, 2 million on 101 screens internationally, the statement said.
“These numbers on ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1′ prove that even a decade into the franchise, ‘Potter’ is as relevant and compelling today as it was back in 2001,” Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box-office division of Hollywood.com, said in an email.
Warner Brothers officials said that the six episodes of the series have garnered a total of 5.4 billion dollars worldwide to date and the successful start of “Deathly Hallows” marks “a place in the history of cinema” for the saga.
The first film, released in 2001, generated revenues of nearly a billion dollars alone.
In this penultimate installment, Harry and his friends Hermione and Ron go looking for the Horcruxes where the Dark Lord, Voldemort, has stored parts of his soul, allowing it to remain immortal.
The film ends in suspense pending the release of the sequel, scheduled for July.
The seven books of the Harry Potter saga on which the movies are based, have sold over 400 million copies in 69 languages.
