Buy this satellite and offer internet to the poor

The non-profit organization Buy This Satellite is raising money to repurpose it as a free internet provider for the poor.

A router the size of a bus that provides free Internet access in countries that lack them: the Terrestar-1 orphan satellite’s orbit would notably cover countries such as Papua New Guinea where the current penetration rate of Internet is only 2.1%. The satellite costs about $ 150,000 and has already raised almost $ 20,000.

The group doesn’t stop here and is also considering the construction and distribution of cheap satellites to provide more universal access to information.
