Jared Lee Loughner’s parents release statement expressing regret

The latter can now breathe alone, but she remains in critical condition according to doctors.

“I’m happy to say she’s holding her own,” Dr. Michael Lemole Jr., chief of neurosurgery at University Medical Center, said. “Her status is the same as it was yesterday. She’s still following simple commands.”

On Monday, the author of the gunfire was presented for the first time in court. Jared Lee Loughner, 22, is charged with murder and attempted murder and faces the death penalty.

His family broke the silence by releasing a statement for the victims and their families.

The statement reads: “This is a very difficult time for us. We ask the media to respect our privacy.”

“There are no words that can possibly express how we feel. We wish there were, so we could make you feel better. We don’t understand why this happened. It may not make any difference, but we wish that we could change the heinous events of Saturday. ”

“We care very deeply about the victims and their families. We are so very sorry for their loss.”

Jared Loughner’s motivation, whose target was clearly Gabrielle Giffords, remained unknown on Monday. US newspapers describe him as a mentally unstable author of bizarre videos and texts published on the internet, rejected by the army because of drugs and expelled from the university due to his disturbing behavior.
