Asked by Barbara Walters about the recent difficulties her ex-husband is having, the actress responded in a non-frustrated manner, saying, “This is Charlie’s lifestyle. He makes no bones about it… and it is what it is.”
When Joy Behar asked Richards if she believed Charlie was an addict, the 40-year-old actress replied, “It’s honestly not my place to judge this situation…I think you should have him on the show and get into detail [about] what’s going on. My concern is our kids.”
Denise was married to Sheen in 2002 and divorced in 2006, is the mother of his two daughters, Sam, 6, and Lola, 5.
Walters then asked the actress to give her “just one line” of how she explains Charlie’s behavior to their kids.
“This has been something I have dealt with for years… this is not a new situation,” Richards explained.
“There are times where his life is more colorful than others, more public than others, and as the kids get older it’s a difficult thing,” she said. “I’m learning as I go too. I have never had to deal with this and this was a subject I had hoped to talk with my children about as they got older. But it’s hard.”
Richards also revealed that there are books that attempt to explain the subject of addiction to children.
“There are images and pictures that a child can understand. I don’t know what they fully comprehend from these conversations. They don’t know what some of these things are. So I do the best I can and it’s not easy,” she said.
Charlie Sheen is currently undergoing treatment at his mansion, which has left the Two and a Half Men show on hiatus for the moment. However, this situation has prompted the series’ creator Chuck Lorre to poke fun at the actor.
