ABBA vs. Queen

“That is the beauty of Abba, the music is timeless… No lyrics can pull at the heartstrings the way that Abba do!”, “This music will never die”, “Just like Queen, the legend that is Abba will never die”,”One of the most beautiful and hyperdramatic songs of the world.” This is what ABBA fans have to say about their idols.

ABBA believed very much in their songs, this is what made them so successful. They made smart, interesting choices. The songs were all carefully written, without clichés, with subjects based on their feelings and experience.

The original members of ABBA include three Swedish singers, namely, Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Göran Bror Benny Andersson, and the Norwegian Anni-Frid “Frida” Lyngstad.

One of their most successful singles, “Dancing Queen” was a perfect compromise between classic pop, which was their basic style, and dance music.

ABBA’s music is consistent high quality, with powerful combination. During the band’s existence, Fältskog and Ulvaeus were a married couple, as were Lyngstad and Andersson – although both couples later divorced.

In 2000 ABBA refuses a $ 1 billion offer to reunite and perform 100 concerts.

The compilation ABBA Gold: Greatest Hits, released in 1992, tops the charts in Great Britain for the fifth time, in August 2008.

ABBA has sold over 375 million records worldwide, making them the fourth best-selling popular music artist in the history of recorded music. They are the first pop group from a non-English-speaking country to enjoy consistent success in the charts of English-speaking countries.

“I had a dream and it was fulfilled by meeting with Benny, Bjorn and Agnetha.” – Anni-Frid Lyngstad

“We don’t want to write political songs. We don’t want to turn our records into speeches.” – Benny Andersson

“There’s a real melancholy in [Abba’s] songs… all the flourishes, like big double octaves on the piano. We stole them like crazy.” – Elvis Costello

“The great Freddie Mercury, lead vocalist and songwriter, died when I was a 3. In my teen years I discovered him and his powerful vocals over a four-octave range; plus his flamboyant stage persona.” ‘He composed ~ “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “Killer Queen”, “Somebody to Love”, “Don’t Stop Me Now”, “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” and “We Are the Champions”. “I love Freddie Mercury and everything about him.” “Queen are the champions FOREVER! Freddie the King of Music for Me!” This is what Queen fans have to say about their idols.

Freddie Mercury was an incredible singer, songwriter, performer, having an amazing voice. His inspiration came mainly from Lez Zeppelin, David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix.

He was a great performer. His voice had a unique sound, on stage he went beyond boundaries, which came in contrast with his shy attitude.

He never accepted compromise, he wanted a band of his own. Freddie was a perfectionist and he formed the band Queen together with Brian May and Roger Taylor.

On November 23 1991, Mercury releases a final statement, announcing he was diagnosed with AIDS. On November 24, less than 24 hours after the announcement was made, Freddie died at the age of 45.

“Following the enormous conjecture in the press over the last two weeks, I wish to confirm that I have tested HIV positive and have AIDS. I felt it correct to keep this information private in order to protect the privacy of those around me. However, the time has come for my friends and fans around the world to know the truth and I hope that everyone will join with me in the fight against this terrible disease.” (Statement released on 23 November 1991)

On April 20 1992, Queen fans were present at a Freddie Mercury tribute concert, held on the Wembley Stadium. Annie Lennox, Guns’n’Roses, Def Leppard, Elton John, George Michael, David Bowie, Metallica and Liza Minnelli together with the other members of the band sang the best Queen songs.

Queen is regarded as one of the world’s best-selling music artists, with a total of 18 number one albums, 18 number one singles and 10 number one DVDs released, as well as album sales ranging between 150 million to over 300 million worldwide.

“When we lost Freddie, we not only lost a great personality, a man with a great sense of humor, a true showman, but we lost probably the best, the really, the best virtuoso rock ‘n’ roll singer of all time. He could sing anything in any style. He could change his style from line to line and, God, that’s an art. And he was brilliant at it.” – Roger Daltrey

“People are always asking me what my lyrics mean. Well I say what any decent poet would say if you dared ask him to analyse his work: if you see it, darling, then it`s there.” – Freddie Mercury

“Years ago, I thought up the name Queen…It`s just a name, but it`s very regal obviously, and it sounds splendid…It`s a strong name, very universal and immediate. It had a lot of visual potential and was open to all sorts of interpretations. I was certainly aware of the gay connotations, but that was just one facet of it.” – Freddie Mercury
