Demi Lovato leaves “Sonny” to pursue music career

Sonny is well and truly over. After ending her treatment against bulimia and self-mutilation, Demi Lovato has announced her intention not to resume the filming of the Disney Channel series.

“I don’t think going back to ‘Sonny’ would be healthy for my recovery,” Lovato tells People. “Being in front of a camera would make me nervous.”

Fearing a relapse, the young actress and singer, 18, decided to say goodbye to the show to devote herself to music.

“It made sense for me to go ahead and leave the show to focus on my music,” Lovato tells People in this week’s issue. “It’s kind of sad for me that a chapter of my life has ended, but there couldn’t be a better time for me to move on.”

The Disney managers officially support Lovato: “We respect Demi’s decision to focus full time on her music and not immediately return to her acting career. She is a talented young woman, and our hearts are with her as she continues to take action to improve her health and bounce back from adversity,” the Disney Channel said in a statement.

Disney will continue the show under its new name, So Random! and will launch it in June in the U.S. If ratings are satisfactory, it could continue much longer than expected.
