In 1981, Diana Spencer was the first to change her wedding vow. Lady Di is still present in the minds of many and Kate Middleton has decided to follow in the footsteps of her late mother-in-law.
The bride will change her vows, in agreement with William. Kate will pledge to “love, comfort, honour and keep” William. The words “I promise to obey” therefore disappear.
They were nevertheless part of the tradition in marriages in the Anglican faith. But William and Kate wish for a simpler wedding than that of the young man’s parents.
“I’ve been very struck by the way in which William and Catherine approached this great event,” said Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury, who will conduct the religious service. “They thought through what they want for themselves, but also what they want to say.”
According to their relatives, the two future spouses treat each other as equals and celebrate a true love match.
