Jack Kevorkian, aka Dr. Death, dies at the age of 83

His lawyer, Mayer Morganroth said that doctor Kevorkian died Friday morning at Beaumont Hospital in Michigan.

Kevorkian died of a blood clot formed in the foot, which got to his heart.

Jack Kevorkian, nicknamed Dr Death, helped over 130 patients commit suicide. He often won in lawsuits filed against him by the state of Michigan., but was eventually sentenced for murder in 1999, after he filmed a video assisted suicide of a person suffering from a disease in its terminal phase, which he then sent to be broadcast on the television show 60 Minutes.

The U.S. Court found him guilty of murder and initially sentenced him to a term of imprisonment of 10 to 25 years. In June 2008, after eight years behind bars, he was released. Jack Kevorkian has been in recent years under probation.

Many assisted suicides Kevorkian attended were implemented with the so-called mercy machine, which administers a lethal dose of drugs to the patient.

Inspired by the novel ” Between the Dying and the Dead: Dr. Jack Kevorkian’s Life and the Battle to Legalize Euthanasia,” written by Neal Nicol and Harry Wylie, the film “You Don’t Know Jack,” a project produced by HBO, presents the story of Kevorkian’s life, played by Al Pacino, with key moments, from the construction of the mercy machine to the first assisted suicide and to the huge media scandal sparked when he began legal proceedings in which he tried to defend patients’ right to suicide.
