The bridge connects the city’s less-developed district of Huangdao to the urban Qingdao and the costs for its construction amounted to about 2.3 billion dollars.
Authorities expect the project to stimulate development in the industrial area of Huangdao and facilitate the rise of foreign trade.
Businessmen have complaining about the current sea transport, which are not effective and whose operation depends on the weather.
Han Shouxin, deputy director of Qingdao’s traffic management committee, says that the bridge will reduce the distance between Huangdao and Quingdao by 30 kilometers, reducing the time travel from 40 to about 20 minutes.
Before completing the project, the Hangzhou Bay Bridge, which stretches across the Hangzhou Bay, was considered the longest cross-sea bridge. But the Americans claim that title too, arguing that the record would be held Lake Pontchartrain Causeway.
Quingdao officials announced that they intend to complete an underwater tunnel about 10 kilometers long, to go alongside the bridge. The tunnel construction costs a billion dollars.
Engineers have encountered big obstacles in building the tunnel, including problems in the geological environment in which the tunnel had to be buily, said Zhou Fengjun, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The project can serve as a textbook for projects in the country dealing with construction of tunnels.
