A robot for dental students, inspired by inflatable dolls

Showa Tanako 2 can do a lot of things that are typical of humans: she can flinch, roll her eyes, cough, and close her mouth when suffering from jaw fatigue. She even has the gag reflex.

Created by Orient Industry, a Japanese inflatable dolls manufacturer, Showa Tanako 2 has skin, tongue and mouth of silicon to create a more realistic image. In addition, the robot is able to take part in simple conversations.

Designed to store and analyze the performance of students, Showa Tanako 2 can help future dentists to improve their skills by providing feedback.

The robot will be released this year, but experts say that all students will have to practice on humans to learn how to perform anesthesia.
