The 34-year-old rapper received mixed reviews from the crowd in part because his performance was delayed a few hours.
According to British newspaper The Sun, the delay occurred because the singer’s voice became hoarse after a dispute with the festival organizers before his concert.
When he finally took the stage, he shouted to one of his band member for playing a wrong song before abruptly leaving the stage.
When he returned, Kanye held a 10-minute speech in which he compared himself to Hitler and basketball player Michael Jordan, under the jeers of the public.
“I walk through the hotel and I walk down the street, and people look at me like I’m f**king insane … like I’m Hitler,” he said.
“One day the light will shine through and one day people will understand everything I ever did.”
A few boos were heard from the crowd, but the singer continued his speech, defending his music video for Monster that shows scenes of cannibalism and women hanged.
He then suggested he should be viewed as a Michael Jordan of the music industry: “Michael Jordan changed so much in basketball, he took his power to make a difference. It’s so much f**king going on in music right now and somebody has to make a f**king difference.”
Kanye West is well known for his outspokenness. In 2009, at the MTV Video Music Awards, he interrupted Taylor Swift’s speech as she won the award for best music video by a female artist. The rapper said that the prize should have been awarded to Beyonce.
A few years earlier, in 2005, he stated that then-President George W. Bush “doesn’t care about black people” during a telethon to raise funds in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
