As the name implies, the Teen Choice Awards ceremony (broadcast by Fox) rewards celebrities based on their popularity among teenagers, who are the only ones voting. A peculiarity of the ceremony is the number of wacky categories.
Taylor Swift, 21, won the top honors at Sunday’s gala. The country singer was awarded the Ultimate Teen Choice prize and five other awards, including favorite female artist, country singer, red carpet fashion icon and best country single.
Selena Gomez, 19, walked away with many trophies, including one for her song Who Says and one for best group for her band The Scene. She was also named choice “hottie.”
Her boyfriend Justin Bieber won the same price, but on the men’s side.
Justin Bieber, 17, was named top hottie as well as the choice twit. Bieber was named top male artist and earned an acting award for his recent appearance in CSI: Miami .
A fierce competition was played out between the vampire saga Twilight and the sorcerers from Harry Potter who were both competing in the same categories.
In the end, the actors in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and Part 2 won the challenge with 7 awards including the award for best fantasy film, best film actress Emma Watson for Part 2, best villain and kiss for part 1.
But the Twilight actors have nothing to be ashamed. Taylor Lautner won the award for best actor in a sci-fi or fantasy, while his co-star Robert Pattinson took home the prizes for best actor and best vampire. Kellan Lutz and Ashley Greene also walked away with awards for the saga.
An important honor was a special Inspire trophy that went to Demi Lovato who entered rehab for abuse issues last year.
After the experience, Lovato has opened up about her problems with eating disorders and cutting herself that she said were a consequence of being bullied in school.
She has since started a foundation called Love Is Louder Than the Pressure to be Perfect to help kids deal with such problems.
