The ceremony took place in the Southern Italian hamlet of Bernalda, hometown of her grandparents, at Palazzo Margherita, an old Italian style villa, that the Coppola family renovated and turned into a luxury residence.
“Everything went well,” Bernalda’s mayor, Leonardo Chiruzzi, who officiated the ceremony, told The Associated Press. “It was simple, calm, in the garden.”
The bride wore a lavender gown, created especially for the occasion by Tunisian designer Azzedine Alaïa. She was walked down the aisle by her father. The groom chose a grey suit.
About 80 people were invited to the ceremony. Among them were director George Lucas and Johnny Depp
The guests were invited to a typical Italian meal, which included cheeses, figs, salads, pasta, fish and pork, as well as wine from the family’s farm.
This is the second marriage for Sofia Coppola, 40, who divorced director Spike Jonze in 2003. Since 2005, she has been in a relationship with Thomas Mars, 34. They are parents of two little girls: Romy, 4½, and Cosima, 15 months.
Sofia Coppola is best known for winning the Academy Award for best original screenplay for “Lost in Translation” in 2004.
Thomas Mars is the lead singer of Phoenix , a French alternative rock group, who won a Grammy in 2010 for “best alternative album” for Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.
