Eddie Murphy officially confirmed as host of the 2012 Academy Awards

The news was confirmed by Brett Ratner and Don Mischer in a statement.

“Eddie is a comedic genius, one of the greatest and most influential live performers ever,” Ratner said. “With his love of movies, history of crafting unforgettable characters and his iconic performances – especially on stage – I know he will bring excitement, spontaneity and tremendous heart to the show Don and I want to produce in February.”

Judging by the criticism that last year’s duo, formed by Anne Hathaway and James Franco, received, the next edition of the Oscars might prove to be a success, given Murphy’s comedic skills.

Eddie Murphy was nominated for an Oscar for his supporting role in the 2006 movie Dreamgirls.

The 2012 Academy Awards will be broadcast by ABC on February 26, 2012 live from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.
