Moore, 49, announced her decision to call it quits in a statement released Thursday.
“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton. As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life,” the statement read.
“This is a trying time for me and my family, and so I would ask for the same compassion and privacy that you would give to anyone going through a similar situation.”
Kutcher responded via Twitter, saying, “I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi. Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail. Love and Light, AK.”
Demi and Ashton married in 2005 after dating for two years.
Their relationship began to falter in September after rumors that the 33-year-old had cheated on his wife with a woman named Sara Leal, 22, on the couple’s sixth wedding anniversary had tabloids going rife with speculation of an impending separation.
The couple had been separated for some time, but had tried to save their marriage by attending Kabbalah services and even going camping last month.
