iOS 5: get emoji emoticons on your iPhone

Called emoji, this is a kind of keyboard, with an array of over 700 emoticons to choose from.

The emoji, who are said to be the elaborate cousins of emoticons, can be turned on with a few easy stepts.

First you visit the general menu of your settings, select Keyboards and then International Keyboards. Scroll through the list of languages until you find Emoji. Tap on it to activate it.

The difference between emoji and the traditional emoticons is that with the former you don’t need you to tilt your head sideways to make sense of the image.

Until now the emoji have been a characteristic of their country of origin, Japan. However, thanks partly to Apple’s latest iPhone update, the emoji may soon become standardized and go international.

The program counts 722 symbols at present.
