In an interview with Dow Jones Newswires, Verizon Wireless Chief Technical Officer David Small said that the carrier plans to launch only 4G LTE capable smartphones for the remainder of the year.
“By the end of the year, our plan is to be in at least 400 markets across the country,” he added.
Given that Apple’s next iPhone is expected to debut this year and that the device is known to be Verizon’s number one smartphone, Apple is expected to comply with this rule. Hence a 4G LTE compatible iPhone 5.
Last week, Apple released a 4G LTE-compatible iPad, a move that many saw as a hint to LTE inclusion on the next iPhone.
The iPhone 5 is also expected to feature a quad-core processor, a larger display, an improved battery, a redesigned antenna and a new aluminum casing.
