Last year, RIM shipped 2.08 million BlackBerrys at home, against 2.85 million units for Apple, according to data compiled by Bloomberg and IDC.
This is a blow to RIM , who in 2010 had sold 500,000 smartphones more than the Cupertino company.
In 2008, a year after the launch of Apple’s smartphone, the ratio was 5 against 1 in favor of the BlackBerry.
Canadian sales, which account for 7% of total sales of BlackBerrys, fell 23% in the third quarter. The situation is even worse in the U.S., where sales of BlackBerry fell 45%.
According to Paul Taylor, a fund manager at BMO Harris Private Banking, the iPhone’s userfriendly features and the app offer have helped it dethrone the BlackBerry.
“For RIM, in its home market, to lose that No. 1 position is strategically important,” said Taylor, who manages about $15 billion in assets, including RIM and Apple shares.
“It identifies, even with a home-country bias, how consumers are responding to the greater functionality of the iPhone.”
But while Apple now dominates smartphone sales in Canada, RIM still holds the lead in Latin America with 10.6 million BlackBerrys sold in 2011 against 2.1 million iPhones.
