In a press release on Monday, Apple announced that more than 2 million iPhone 5s were pre-ordered in the first 24 hours of availability.

“iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we’ve ever made, and we hope customers love it as much as we do.”

The company said that most orders will be delivered on September 21, others won’t arrive until October.

AT&T also announced that its customers ordered a record number of the device, more than any previous iPhone.

Last year, the iPhone 4S hit 1 million pre-orders in its first 24 hours.

Apple was reportedly taken aback by the huge number of customers pre-ordering the device.

“Pre-orders for iPhone 5 have been incredible,” Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris recently said in a statement. “We’ve been completely blown away by the customer response.”

Apple shares went up 0.8 percent at $697 each in afternoon trading on Monday, Reuters reports.
