Miley Cyrus performance at VMAs criticized by celebrities, Parents Group

The former Hannah Montana star put on quite a show by performing her single “We can’t stop” and a duet with Robin Thicke of the tube “Blurred Lines.”

However, the performance outraged celebrities and a parents’ association for the protection of children against inappropriate material on TV.

“This much is absolutely clear: MTV marketed adults-only material to children while falsely manipulating the content rating to make parents think the content was safe for their children,” a statement from the Parents Television Council said.

Advisory board member Paul Porter said: “The Miley Cyrus/Robin Thicke performance simply substituted talent with s**.

In the media and on social networks, millions of people have said that Cyrus had crossed the line with her behavior.

Fellow celebrities reacted to Miley’s onstage performance.

“That was girl gone wild. So sad, so sad,” 80s star Cyndi Lauper said in a radio interview with Australia’s Brig & Lehmo on Gold 104.3.

“She’s in a song that literally says that the blurred lines allowed you to—when a woman says no, she means yes—and that’s frightful because that’s date r**e,” Lauper said.

“And there she is, a young twentysomething trying to prove she can hang with the big boys and girls, you know, basically simulating a Girl Gone Wild video onstage. And I just felt like that was so beneath her and raunchy, really raunchy. It wasn’t even art.”

Actress Brooke Shields, who played Cyrus’ mother on “Hannah Montana,” spoke about the controversy on NBC’s “Today.”

“I was Hannah Montana’s mother!” she said. “Where did I go wrong?”

“You could see her trying so hard to go against that,” Shields added. “She can sing beautifully, and I feel like if she lets that lead, rather than let her bottom lead … . (She’s) trying so, so hard.”

On MSNBC, Morning Joe host Mika Brzezinski called the performance “really, really disturbing”, and NBC’s Anna Chan rated it as “embarrassingly raunchy”.

Here’s what other celebs had to say about Cyrus:

James Van Der Beek: “Things I learned watching the #VMAs2013: There’s nothing you can do with a foam finger that you can’t air on MTV.”

Josh Gracin: “Thanks Miley Cyrus.. Now I have to explain to my 11 yr old daughter why she no longer can follow your career.”

Kelly Clarkson: “Just saw a couple performances from the VMA’s last night. 2 words… #pitchystrippers”

Belinda Carlisle: “Where are Miley Cyrus’ parents? That was one horrific performance!”

Nick Cannon: “Remind me to never let my kids into show biz.”

Clark Gregg: “Oh Miley…”

Max Greenfield: “Billy Ray SIGHrus”

Yvette Nicole Brown: “Miley, step away from the foam finger and put your tongue away…PLEASE. #VMAs I’m so confused. #OldFogeyTweet”
