iPhone 5S fingerprint sensor: How the Touch ID works

The fingerprint sensor is implemented directly into the Home button, and it is able to read fingerprints at an angle of 360 degrees.

The fingerprints will be used to unlock the device and allow the purchase or downloading of applications or other content available in the App Store or iTunes.

The Touch ID can be used in any orientation by users as it reads the fingerprints immediately and stores them in the smartphone without synchronizing them with iCloud or other cloud system.

The ring encircling the Touch ID is made of stainless steel and it is intended to activate the fingerprint sensor when touched.
