The 55-year-old singer revealed in November’s Harper’s Bazaar that she was raped on the roof of a building at knifepoint, shortly after moving to N.Y.C.
Madonna didn’t specify how old she was when the attack took place, but she was around 20 when she came to New York City in 1978.
“New York wasn’t everything I thought it would be,” Madonna said. “It did not welcome me with open arms. The first year, I was held up at gunpoint. Raped on the roof of a building I was dragged up to with a knife in my back, and had my apartment broken into three times. I don’t know why; I had nothing of value after they took my radio the first time.”
The attack was revealed for the first time by the singer in an interview in 1995, and Lucy O’Brien recounted it in the biographical book “Like and Icon,” Hollywood Reporter writes.
