Market researcher Gartner reports that the new consoles will generate sales of $93 billion this year, an 18% increase compared to last year’s $79 billion earnings.
“As mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) continue to grow, the mobile game category will show the biggest growth due to the entertainment value provided by games compared with other app categories,” says Gartner research director Brian Blau.
“This growth is fueled by healthy premium mobile device sales globally and a desire by consumers to play games on these multifunction devices that are capable of displaying increasingly sophisticated game content.”
Gartner estimates that the video game market, including both video games for consoles, online games, games for mobile devices and the PC, could exceed $100 billion in 2015, reaching $111 billion.
Video games for mobile devices are seeing the biggest increase. Income from them will almost double in the period 2013-2015, from $ 13.2 billion to $ 22 billion.
