The statements are part of a deposition taken on Sept. 9 in Los Angeles as part of a lawsuit Cruise filed against Bauer Publishing over claims that he abandoned his daughter Suri following the former couple’s divorce in June 2012.
When questioned whether Holmes left him to “protect” Suri from Scientology, Cruise responded, “I find that question offensive. … There is no need to protect my daughter from my religion.”
“And Ms. Holmes has never indicated in any way that was one of the reasons she left you? … To protect Suri from Scientology?” the legal team asked again.
He responded: “Did she say that? That was one of the assertions, yes. There are many other aspects to the divorce.”
However, according to People, a Nov. 5 document shows that Cruise said, “Katie has never told me that this [Scientology] was a reason for our divorce.”
During the deposition, he did admit that he hadn’t seen his daughter for more than 100 days from Aug. 4 until Thanksgiving in 2012.
He argued that he managed to stay in touch on a regular basis via phone.
“You have to work at it,” he said. “I’ve gotten very good at it. I’ve gotten very good at it. I tell wonderful stories and they like hearing it.”
Suri and her mother are currently in South Africa where the actress is filming a movie.
