Earlier this week it was reported that Apple is investing $578 million in GT Advanced Technologies, a factory specializing in the manufacturing of sapphire panels for mobile devices.
Asian publication Digitimes claims that Apple could be planning to order 5-inch sapphire panels for the iPhone 6.
GT Advanced Technologies could produce between 34 million and 51 million 5-inch iPhone screens per year.
This wouldn’t be sufficient to cover the demand of the market, but Apple gets its components from multiple sources, in order to have enough supplies.
Apple is already using sapphire to protect the main camera and the Home button on the iPhone 5S but the company is rumored to be planning to abandon the Corning Gorilla Glass it currently uses.
