Philip Seymour Hoffman found dead in New York apartment

His body was found dead in the bathroom of his home in West Village, near Manhattan, by David Katz around 11:15 a.m, the Wall Street Journal reports.

According to preliminary findings, the actor may have succumbed to a heroin overdose as a syringe was found near his body.

“It’s pretty apparent that it was an overdose,” an official told the NYT. “The syringe was in his arm.”

The New York City Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

In May 2013 he entered rehab for abusing substances including heroin. He had experienced problems with drugs during his youth, and he confided last year that he had relapsed after 23 years.

In 2006, Philip Seymour Hoffman received the Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Actor for his performance as Truman Capote in the eponymous biopic which he was also produced.
