The Wall Street Journal reported that the material will be present on the two versions of iPhone 6 of 4.7 and 5.5 inches, but only on high-end models.
According to the publication, the production of sapphire panels is quite expensive and would therefore require Apple to make the smartphone more expensive.
The report notes that a sapphire screen would cost $16 against $3 for a glass Gorilla Glass.
“Apple is considering using sapphire screens in more-expensive models of the two new, larger iPhones it plans to debut this fall, if it can get enough of the material, people familiar with the matter say. Some analysts expect Apple to charge more for the phones than previous new models, because of increased component costs,” the publication writes.
Previous rumors have claimed that Cupertino plans to release the iPhone 6 with a sapphire crystal but that shortage of the material has been a problem.
A report earlier this month claimed that Apple may not implement a sapphire display into the next iPhone.
