Live coverage of Apple’s iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and iWatch release event

Apple CEO Tim Cook took the stage and the volume of applause was impressive.

“Today, we are launching, the biggest advancement in the history of iPhone,” he said.

In an iPhone launch video the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are presented, seemingly confirming the numerous leaks that have circulated online recently.

They include rounded edges, a repositioned power button on the right side and most importantly the existence of two versions of the smartphone with 4.7 and 5.5 inches displays.

The 4.7-inch model is 6.9 mm, while the larger variant is 7.1mm, making them thinner than the previous generation.

The devices are equipped with a new generation of Retina Display, Retina HD, with 1334 x 750 pixels for the iPhone 6 and full 1080p HD resolution and a pixel density of 401 ppi for the iPhone 6 Plus.

Given the larger displays, the smartphones benefit from a system that enhances one handed use by which content slides down for better access.

The A8 processor is 13% smaller than the A7, and also 25% more powerful and 50% more energy efficient.

Games running on the new A8 processor demonstrated the graphics performance.

The battery life is better, with 24 hours of uninterrupted conversation on the iPhone 6 Plus and 50 hours of audio playback and 11 hours of video watching for the iPhone 6.

Phil Schiller introduced the M8 motion coprocessor that can track elevation changes, like stair climbing, thanks to the barometer sensor.

The new camera features on the new smartphones were also detailed, with specs including an 8MP iSight camera, True Tone flash, 1.5 micron pixels, 2.2 aperture and an all-new sensor.

Panorama mode has been improved to 43 megapixels and with the new gyroscope users can take seamless photos.

1080p videos are recorded at 30fps and 60fps, and slo-mo at 120 fps or 240fps.

The cameras on the two devices are almost the same, but the iPhone 6 Plus features optical image stabilization.

The front-facing FaceTime HD camera has a f2.2 aperture that allows 81% more light and also brings a burst selfie mode and shoots HDR videos.

Both devices will include NFC for the company’s new payment service called Apple Pay.

The handsets are environmentally friendly and will be available in gold, silver and space gray.

As far as pricing is concerned, the iPhone 6 comes in at $199 (16 GB), $299 (64 GB) and $399 (128 GB) with a two-year contract.

The smart watch pairs with the Apple phones to display notifications and comes in two sizes.

Equipped with a sapphire coated display and a digital crown that serves as the home button, the device is called the Apple Watch.

Apple

“This is the most personal device we’ve ever created. We’ve set out to make the best watch in the world. One that is precise. It’s synchronized with a universal time standard,” Tim Cook said.

The wearable comes with a built-in gyroscope, a heart rate sensor, and a Taptic Engine for haptic feedback.

It will be available in three versions, including a sports model and an 18 carat gold model called the “Apple Watch Edition.”
