Disney Research and Swiss Engineering school ETH Zurich have built the BeachBot, a robot in the shape of a turtle that makes the finest sand drawings by simply driving in circles.

The robot manages to draw all kinds of figures in the sand, in particular some of the most famous Disney characters.

BeachBot’s drawings are made in the sand with a kind of rake with seven teeth that can be lifted independently to make thicker or thinner lines.

It moves on a set of big soft wheels that Disney calls balloon wheels for the purpose of not leaving any marks on the sand.

The robot can be controlled manually or automatically according to an image file passed to it.
