According to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal, Cupertino is getting ready for an initial production of 5 to 6 million units, then ramp up in anticipation of growing demand.
A quarter of this volume would be devoted to the entry-level model Apple Watch Sport, while a third part of the order would relate to the mid-tier Apple Watch version.
The top version, the Apple Watch Edition, will be the subject of relatively small orders, but Apple plans to order more than one million units per month in the second quarter.
With an 18-karat gold casing, the model could be particularly costly, even becoming the most expensive product ever marketed by Apple, the report notes.
Pricing for the Apple Watch Sport version is said to start at $349.
Taiwanese company Quanta Computer will be the main contractor for the Apple Watch, whose launch is expected in April, the insiders said.
