Charlotte is the feminine of the French name Charles and it is a tribute to Prince William’s father. The Princess’ first name is also inspired by the middle name of Kate’s sister, Pippa Middleton.
In the British history there have been a few famous Charlottes, such as Princess Charlotte of Wales or the mother of King George IV, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.
Elizabeth is taken after Princess Charlotte’s great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II and the late Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Also, the middle name of Kate’s mother, Carole Middleton, is Elizabeth, and her great-grandmother, who died when the Duchess was 9, was Elizabeth Harrison.
Finally, Diana was obviously a tribute to Prince William’s late mother, Lady Di, who died on 31 August 1997 in Paris.
Kate and William welcomed their second child, Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge, on May 2.
