Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton announce their divorce

“This is not the future we envisioned,” Shelton and Lambert’s reps said in a statement to AP on Monday, July 20. “And it is with heavy hearts that we move forward separately. We are real people, with real lives, with real families, friends and colleagues. Therefore, we kindly ask for privacy and compassion concerning this very personal matter.”

The country singers, who celebrated 4 years of marriage on May 14, met in 2005 at the CMT’s 100 Greatest Duets Concert, and married in 2011 in Boerne, Texas.

Lambert, 31, opened up about her marriage to Shelton, 39, in an interview with Marie Claire‘s January 2015 issue.

“I’m not sunshine and roses,” she said then. “Blake’s the happiest person on the planet. He pulls me out of my darkness … Literally, everything is the best about being married.”

In fact, last year, on her husband’s 38th birthday on June 18, the singer called him, “my best friend in the whole world,” in an anniversary message.

Shelton addressed rumors about their marriage in a 2014 interview with TODAY’s Carson Daly.

“I would take this opportunity to say, to clear the air,” he said. “You might pick up a magazine or a tabloid any day of the week that’ll say something about my relationship with Miranda, that it’s in turmoil.”

”And the truth is, I’ve never felt a stronger bond with … not only with her but with any other human being in my life. … Miranda and I — she’s my life,” he added.

Back in 2013, Shelton tweeted a sweet message for his wife after returning from Oklahoma.

“Landing back in Oklahoma, my home… I can’t wait to see my wife. I couldn’t possibly love and respect her more,” he wrote at the time.

The couple always responded with humor to rumors about their relationship, and their split comes as a surprise for their fans as they always seemed like a strong couple.

In 2013, Lambert spoke about her marriage after winning four awards at the ACM Awards.

“Like I always say, my mom said to my dad, ‘Divorce is not an option,’” she said.

“So we really love each other and have a real marriage outside of all of this. When this is all said and done, we will be drinking a beer together on a front porch somewhere, reminiscing about the good old days. That’s what I’m happy about,” Lambert added.

Shelton and Lambert haven’t made any comment about the divorce on social media leading up to the announcement.
