Find out what Kate Middleton and Prince William said during their engagement to support suicide prevention

Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s parents visited on Thursday, March 10, the St Thomas’ Hospital to meet a suicide survivor and his rescuer.

Kate, who was dressed up in an Erdem coat and a Jonathan Saunders dress, and William talked with Jonny Benjamin, who tried to end his life by jumping off Waterloo Bridge eight years ago, and his savior Neil Laybourn.

“Someone told me five people a day try and kill themselves,” the Duke told Benjamin and Laybourn [via People]. “I was just blown away by the statistics.”

“For both of us, the mental health piece has got lots of aspects. It’s such a big issue that we need to do something about it,” William added.

Catherine has been putting a lot of effort into dealing with children’s mental health issues and pointed out that such problems often develop into more serious obstacles such as addiction, homelessness, crime and abuse.

“We see through the work we do with addiction, homelessness and knife crime that a lot of it stems back to childhood,” the 34-year-old royal said.

In the past months Duchess Kate has been focusing on raising awareness about children’s mental health.
