Kate Middleton carries out new sailing engagement in Portsmouth

The 34-year-old steeped out in Portsmouth on Friday to support a sailing charity, the 1851 Trust, of which she has been a Royal Patron since 2014.

The charity seeks to inspire the youth in pudsuing sports, education and technology by using sailing and the marine industry.

The Duchess, née Kate Middleton, visited Sir Ben Ainslie’s America’s Cup base in order to launch the 1851 Trust’s two flagship sailing projects in 2016.

During her visit, Catherine joined Olympic sailor Sir Ben Ainslie on the Americas Cup test boat and was even given the chance to take over the helm.

Kate’s sailing skills were praised last year by Motiv8’s Claire Ansell, who talked with People magazine about the Duchess’ passion for sailing.

“Kate spent a lot of time talking to the children about their experiences on the boats,” Ansell told the magazine.

“Kate told us that she really liked sailing and actually got quite technical about things – talking about tacking and other different things that you can do with a boat. The children understood what she meant, and it was really lovely for them. They were all very excited,” she added.
