Some consumer advocates want the Obama administration to raise Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards to 45 mpg by 2020.

So far, CAFE standards are set to reach 35.5 mpg in 2016, with a 40 percent increase in today’s standard.

The group proposes to further raise fuel economy requirements to 45 mpg by 2020, claiming that technologies available today will allow automakers to make it happen.

In addition, the Consumer Federation wants changed the party that sets the CAFE standards.

The standards are currently a joint effort between the EPA and the NHTSA.

Because the Consumer Federation thinks that the NHTSA has been influenced by car companies, they want to give more power to EPA.A debate and planning for the future standards will probably arise once the proposed 2016 CAFE standards are finalized.
