An Audi official revealed that the manufacturer in Ingolstadt wants to surprise the public with its electric models. Audi will try to make everybody say “Wow.”

Audi’s strategy for its future electric models is a very well defined one. The manufacturer in Ingolstadt plans to launch a full range of models with zero emissions, known for their E-tron concept.

Frank van Meel, Audi’s head of electromobility strategy, decided to talk about the future features of the models in the range of E-tron concepts.”We monitor their mobility behavior in the car, by bike, by foot, subway, whatever.”Then they change to the A1 E-tron, and we have a look to see if they still have the same mobility behavior or it if changes.”

What Audi is after, he says, is “more or less the ‘Wow!’ effect — ‘I didn’t know it could be that cool.’ ”

Audi had planned to achieve a “WOW” effect since he developed the E-tron concept, unveiled at the Frankfurt auto show in 2009. Audi is now trying to achieve the same eeffect, as it prepares to make public its first electric models, most likely starting next year.

Currently, Audi’s plan is to offer electric versions of existing models, and gradually to start developing special platforms for such vehicles.

Van Meel also said that developing a new platform will depend on several factors.

“It’s a question of incentives, it’s a question of legislation, but it’s also a question of ‘Can I use car-pool lanes, bus/taxi lanes? Will there be preferred parking spaces? Will there be shopping malls with free charging?’ Then, from the customer’s viewpoint, it gets more interesting,” concluded van Meel.
