The Swiss authorities announced on Tuesday the opening of a formal investigation against the car manufacturer BMW, which refuses to sell vehicles to Swiss customers in some European countries, according to Bloomberg.

“The Competition Commission (Comco) has opened an investigation against the BMW Group as it may prevent the sales of new vehicles from BMW and MINI customers in Switzerland” a Comco representative said in a statement.

According to the Competition Comission, they have reports that the BMW distribution companies in Europe have prohibited the sales of BMW and MINI vehicles to Swiss customers.

Switzerland will therefore assess whether the German manufacturer has implemented a “possible allocation of territories, illegal from the standpoint of the competition law.”

The Competition Comission had confirmed to AFP on Wednesday on a Swiss television channel that it would “consider” the situation.

BMW risks facing a fine of up to 10% of the income of the last three years, the Competition Commission had specified.
