After six years of waiting and postponing, Sony finally released its Gran Turismo 5 game.

The latest installment in the Gran Turismo franchise has passed 5.5 million units worldwide since its release last November, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. announced in a statement.

European customers bought this fifth episode in 3.6 million copies in two weeks’ time. 1.25 million games were sold in North America and Japanese sales totaled 550,000 copies.

Compared to other games in the GT franchise, the success of Gran Turismo 5 is overwhelming. Gran Turismo 5: Prologue sold only 5.03 million copies since it was released in April 2008, while Gran Turismo 4: Prologue and Gran Turismo PSP have been left behind in GT’s sales top. GT5 profits have covered almost half the volume of sales from the past 12 years.

These figures highlight Sony’s commercial success. Gran Turismo games have sold nearly 60 million units worldwide since its launch in 1997.
