Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver: a look at a 25-year marriage

A story of Austrian-born bodybuilder/action movie superhero meets TV journalist.

Despite appearing as an unlikely pair, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver lived one of the best Hollywood romances.

When 21-year-old Arnold Schwarzenegger arrived in the United States, he had already won the title of Mr. Universe (the youngest in history) and planned to live his dream: win bodybuilding titles in America thanks to his impressive musculature and then get into cinema.

As he set foot in America for a few months, Arnold fell under the spell of Barbara Baker, a waitress in Los Angeles. They lived five years together in Santa Monica and maintained good relations even after their breakup in 1974. In 1977, he met Sue Moray, an assistant hairdresser in Beverly Hills. While maintaining a relationship with her, Arnold met Maria Shriver, a 22-year-old student just graduated from Georgetown University and coming from the Kennedy family, a few months later. He dated the two women for a few months before his heart chose Maria.

In 1986, he married Maria Shriver, a TV journalist then. Daughter of R. Sargent Shriver (former U.S. ambassador to France – from 1968 to 1970 – and candidate for vice-presidency of the United States in 1972) and Eunice Kennedy, sister of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Maria soon gave birth to their first child, Katherine Eunice, born December 13, 1989.

While Arnold’s career in cinema took off, Maria became a popular American television journalist, author of best-sellers and mother of three other children she had with Arnold, who became one of the biggest stars in Hollywood: Christina Maria, born July 23, 1991, Patrick Arnold, born September 18, 1993, and Christopher Sargent, born September 27, 1997.

Putting his movie career on hold, Arnold launched into the battle of politics.

In 2003 he became the 38th Governor of California and had two terms (until January 2011). As he prepared for a comeback in film, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver have just announced the end of their romance.
