Halle Berry, who has recently dazzled photographers on the red carpet with her new comedy by the Farrelly brothers, and her romance with Olivier Martinez, said that, despite her age, she still hasn’t overcome the trauma she witnessed when she was a child.

The 44-year-old woman was terrified by a brutal father who physically abused her mother.

“I think I’ve spent my adult life dealing with the sense of low self-esteem that sort of implanted in me. Somehow I felt not worthy,” she told CNN.

She further explained that underneath the accomplished woman she is right now, she is a “damaged” girl.

“Before I’m ‘Halle Berry,’ I’m little Halle….a little girl growing in this environment that damaged me…I’ve spent my adult life trying to really heal from that.”

Having experienced this trauma, the beautiful actress volunteers at Jenesse Center, a Los Angeles shelter for women leaving abusive relationships, and helps in the renovation of apartments to accommodate them: “I have a spot in my soul that understands the devastation that this causes a family.”
