James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor co-starred in the movie Giant. During the filming of this feature film in 1954, the two actors developed a strong friendship that led Dean – who died before the release of the drama – to make rather shocking confessions to Taylor.

Journalist Kevin Sessums claims that in an interview with Elizabeth Taylor in 1997, the actress revealed a secret about her late friend. Sessums alleges she made him promise to keep quiet until her own death.

He held his promise. On Thursday, one day after the death of the last true legend of the golden age of Hollywood, he revealed in an article for the news site Daily Beast an excerpt from his interview with Taylor that was never published.

“I loved Jimmy. I’m going to tell you something, but it’s off the record until I die. OK? When Jimmy was 11 and his mother passed away, he began to be molested by his minister,” Taylor said in the chat 14 years ago.

“I think that haunted him the rest of his life. In fact, I know it did. We talked about it a lot. During Giant we’d stay up nights and talk and talk, and that was one of the things he confessed to me,” Elizabeth Taylor revealed to the journalist, who was employed by American magazine POZ, which was dedicated to people with AIDS.

James Dean died Sept. 30, 1955 following a fatal collision on a California highway while he was driving a Porsche 550 Spyder. He was 24.

He was the first actor to win a posthumous nomination for the Oscars in 1956 for his role in the film East of Eden. He received another one the following year for his role in the movie Giant.
