Mel Gibson pleaded no contest on Friday to charges of assault on his ex-girlfriend.
The actor is sentenced to 36 months of probation and must take part for one year in therapy on domestic violence.
Mel Gibson has said little during the hearing, simply acknowledging his understanding of the charges against him.
The prosecution accuses Mel Gibson of having “willfully and unlawfully” used force and violence against Oksana Grigorieva, a 40-year-old musician from Russia and mother of his 1-year-old daughter Lucia, during an altercation on Jan. 6, 2010 at his home in Malibu California.
Also on Friday, Grigorieva was acquitted of the charge of extortion that the actor had filed against her.
In a statement released earlier this week, Blair Berk, Mel Gibson’s lawyer, said her client had asked her to submit a proposal to the state prosecutor to put an end to the matter. According to the lawyer, Mel Gibson feared a negative impact on his children.
