Oscars 2012: Octavia Spencer wins Best Supporting Actress award

Berenice Bejo (The Artist), Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids), Janet McTeer (Albert Nobbs), Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain (The Help) compete for the title of Best Supporting Actress.

Octavia Spencer won the Oscar for Best actress.

Berenice Bejo plays struggling actress Peppy Miller in The Artist, who rises to fame thanks to help from George Valentin, played by Jean Dujardin.

Melissa McCarthy received a nomination as best supporting actress for her work in the movie Bridesmaids after a long career on the small screen.

Janet McTeer was at her second Oscar nomination in her career after being nominated for best actress in 1999 for Tumbleweeds.

Octavia Spencer’s performance as Minny in the film The Help has earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress but she was previously honored for her role as she received a Golden Globe and SAG awards.

Spencer’s co-star Jessica Chastain was also nominated in the category, deemed by many as a plausible winner prior to the ceremony.
