17-year-old Teresa Scanlan was crowned Miss America on Saturday.
Teresa comes from a small town in Nebraska and has six brothers and sisters. She is youngest woman to be honored with the title since 1921 but despite her age, she has conquered the judges with her general culture and knowledge.
Teresa has received, among other things, a $ 50,000 scholarship. She aspires to attend law school and be a politician one day.
Scanlan plans to bring awareness to eating disorders during her year-long reign, saying she got her inspiration from a friend who struggled with bulimia.
“We simply can’t afford to let this issue go on because millions of girls and boys are out there dying form eating disorders. You can be this successful and you don’t have to hurt yourself, you don’t have to go to extremes,” she said. “I never passed up a cookie on my journey here.”
The Miss America contest was founded in 1921 and it is a student competition. A scholarship is awarded to the winner to enroll in a university of her choice. In addition, having a model’s figure is imperative in this contest.
