Prince William and his wife Catherine have chosen as their permanent residence Kensington Palace, where Princess Diana lived whit Prince Charles, towards the end of her life, but the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will live there starting with 2013, because the property is currently being renovated.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s palace officials has made the announcement Sunday, saying that Kensington Palace will become the permanent London residence of the royal couple, in the mid or at the end of 2013, as the renovations unfold.

“Early indications suggest that large quantities of asbestos will have to be removed, as well as work on the heating and hot water systems and electrical wiring,” palace officials told People in a statement.

“The extent of the work needed to turn the apartment back into a home is not yet known, but it is expected that the apartment will not be ready for occupation until at least the middle of 2013.”

The choice of the young couple was approved by the Prince’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and his father, Prince Charles.

In this vast and sumptuous royal palace from the 17th century, situated in central London and consisting of numerous apartments, Princess Diana lived during her marriage with Prince Charles in 1981. Princes William and Harry grew up in Kensington Palace.

Prince William and his wife will arrange an apartment in Kensington Palace, which previously belonged to Princess Margaret, the Queen’s sister, until her death in 2002.

Currently, a part of the apartment houses host exhibitions.
