Royal weddings are fascinating, but in the end, all eyes are on the bride and her dress.

Queen Elizabeth II

On November 20, 1947, Elizabeth Windsor, 21, daughter of King George VI of Great Britain, married Philip Mountbatten, 25, heir to the title of prince of Greece and Denmark, at Westminster Abbey. Elizabeth II ascended the British throne and was crowned on June 2, 1953. Prince Philip became Duke of Edinburgh.

The wedding gown for Queen Elizabeth II was designed by Norman Hartnell. He used an ivory duchesse satin ornamented with flower designs of jasmine, smilax, lilac and white rose-like blossoms added to the train, embellished by white crystals and pearls, as well as thousands of crystals and 10,000 pearls imported from America. The 13-foot train had elaborate embroidery were the inspiration of Botticelli’s Primavera, a symbol of revival and hope after the years of war.

Grace Kelly

On April 18, 1956, Prince Rainier III, 32, married American actress Grace Kelly, 26, in Monte Carlo, after a short engagement. Princess Grace of Monaco died on September 14, 1982 in a car accident.

Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier III in an incredible gown designed by Helen Rose.

The dress had a rounded collar, long sleeves, a tight bodice made from Brussels lace with elaborate floral motifs made from seed pearls and a skirt of tens of meters of taffeta, silk and antique lace. 25 yards of silk taffeta and 100 yards of silk net were used in the construction of the dress. The lace was over a century old and had flower designs in it.

The movie star turned into a princess in every sense of the word.

Princess Diana

The marriage of Lady Diana Frances Spencer and Prince Charles of Wales took place on July 29, 1981 at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London.The ceremony was officiated by religious Archbishop of Canterbury and 25 other priests in the presence of 3,500 people. That day, over 750 million people worldwide watched the ceremony.

Diana’s wedding dress, created by David and Elizabeth Emmanuel, had a bold design, with exaggerated and puffy shoulders, and it was made of taffeta, silk, lace and hand embroidery. Decorated with 10,000 pearls, the dress was no less than 7, 62 meters (25 feet) long and cost 9,000 pounds.

Kate Middleton

The wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton was held at Westminster Abbey in London on April 29, 2011. The couple officially received the title of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The designer of the wedding dress was Sarah Burton, who has long been a disciple of the “enfant terrible” of British fashion, Alexander McQueen. Kate Middleton had worked closely with Burton to design the dress.

The gown was a white and ivory dress, with long sleeves, a V lace neckline and belted waist and a two-meter train. The ivory silk motifs applied on the dress described the four floral emblems of the United Kingdom: the rose, the thistle, the daffodil and the shamrock.

Charlene Wittstock

Prince Albert II of Monaco married Charlene Wittstock on July 1, 2011 in a civil ceremony, followed by a religious service on July 2, 2011. It was described as “the greatest party in the last 55 years” as it was the first wedding in the principality after the marriage of Albert’s father, Rainier III, to Grace Kelly.

The bride wore an an off-the-shoulder silk ivory wedding dress, embroidered with Swarovski crystals and thousands of pearls in the shape of flowers, created by Giorgio Armani.

The dress had a 20-meter silk veil, accounting for 100 hours of work for the achievement of its subtle embroidery. Charlene had her hair in a bun and she walked down the aisle followed by seven bridesmaids.
