William and Kate’s unusual wedding gift: a baby penguin

Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton received a penguin chick from an endangered species as a wedding gift.

The unusual gift was made by Chester Zoo, informs Daily Mail.

The baby penguin, named Acorn, won’t leave the zoo to be hosted by the newlyweds. It was adopted by William and Kate and it will continue to live at Chester Zoo, with another 50 penguins of the Humboldt species from which it belongs.

A zoo representative said that it is an honor to have William and Kate as adoptive parents of a penguin.

“Hopefully the happy couple will come and see little Acorn playing in his pool very soon,” the spokesman for the zoo said.

The penguin was chosen as a gift for the newlyweds with the help of public votes on a social networking site. 400 species of animals were posted as gift options, and Acorn raised over 20 percent of the votes.

Humboldt penguins live on the coasts of Peru and Chile and are endangered due to abusive fishing, climate change and ocean acidification.
