U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron has reportedly started the process that will let the possible first-born daughter of Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, to accede the throne.

Press Association

If William and Kate’s firstborn child is a girl, she would take the throne even if a younger brother came along.

Under current law, males always inherit the British throne unless there are no male heirs.

The British Prime Minister wrote a letter to the Commonwealth proposing a change in the 1701 Act of Settlement that would allow the royals’ firstborn to be the next monarch regardless of gender.

If the rule changed, the Commonwealth countries who have Queen Elizabeth, 85, as their monarch, would have to adopt the new regulations as well.

His proposal will be discussed at a meeting of Commonwealth leaders in Perth, Australia in October.
