Queen Elizabeth II and the Commonwealth have agreed to change certain rules in the British Monarchy. Not only the heir to the throne could now be a girl, but the first child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be allowed to marry a Catholic.

During a meeting of the 16 governments with Queen Elizabeth II as their head of state, British Prime Minister David Cameron said, “Put simply, if the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were to have a little girl, that girl would one day be our queen.”

Under current laws, the immediate heir is the first-born son of the monarch. In the UK , a woman cannot ascend the throne if she has a brother.

But the law of succession to the British throne is about to be permanently changed: now, a girl will have access to the throne, even if she has a younger brother.

The leaders of the 16 governments and Queen Elizabeth II have agreed to change the laws which have remained the same since the 17th century.

But reform doesn’t end there as it was also announced that an heir or heiress to the throne is now allowed or to marry a Catholic, although the English monarch is the Supreme Governor of the Anglican Church.
