Shelley Malil is not about to revisit a film set. The Indo-American actor who starred alongside Steve Carrell in the movie “40 Year-Old Virgin” was sentenced to life in prison for attempted murder by the Superior Court of San Diego.
It was more than two years ago that Malil was arrested for the violent attack.
The 46-year-old actor visited his girlfriend, Kendra Beebe, to make amends for taking personal items from her home. Once there, he caught her with another man. Going insane, he grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed her ex 23 times. Miraculously, the girl got away despite serious injuries to the neck and chest.
“I stand before the defendant alive,” Beebe testified. “Despite plunging a knife in me 23 times and trying to kill me, I am alive. Despite the wicked scars he left on my body, I am alive.”
At his trial, Shelley Malil apologized to his victim and said he deserved to be imprisoned.
“I failed miserably, not only as a human being, but as a father, son, uncle, brother, friend,” he said. “What I did to Kendra – I don’t have the words to express my remorse.”
The actor, however, might not spend the rest of his life behind bars. His sentence was accompanied by an opportunity to request parole in twelve years. Having already served two years in prison, he can actually claim it in ten years.
